There are a lot of pleasures and advantages of having children who are digitally adept and who can safely and responsibly navigate the digital world. However, as parents, we have a constant and unending role to make sure we teach our children about navigating the internet well.
One element that I recently learnt about is what is known as “Digital Kidnapping”. This is where someone steals photos and reposts them on the internet, usually as their own. It is a variant of digital theft.
Advice on dealing with Digital Kidnapping from Dr D’Arienzo on the TD Jakes Show;
* Realize that we now live in a digital neighbourhood with all sorts of threats and exposure.
* Talk to the children – ask about their day, tech and privacy settings.
* Teach children not to take pictures with reference settings such as street signs, names of schools, etc.
* Teenage children can use multiple pass-codes to access phone codes.
* As parents, Google search on digital safety for children.
It is therefore imperative that we constantly keep watch of our children’s online and offline activities and to educate ourselves on the digital trends that can have a positive and negative bearing on us all.
